The University of Fiji (UniFiji) and Dialogue Fiji made joint submissions to the Electoral Law Reform Commission yesterday, calling for a review of the Electoral Act 2014.

UniFiji vice-chancellor Professor Shaista Shameem and Dialogue Fiji’s executive director Nilesh Lal told the commission that both organisations were ideally placed to undertake collaborative research on the topic of electoral law reform.

“This is because Dialogue Fiji had a long history of engagement on electoral matters through its advocacy, policy dialogue and research mandate,” Mr Lal said.

“UniFiji brought legal knowledge, academic expertise and international best practice guidelines to ensure that the submissions to the commission was both theoretically sound and practically grounded.”

Meanwhile, Prof Shameem said Dialogue Fiji was the leading advocate for public good reforms in Fiji.

“This resonated with the university’s strategic plan 2022-2026 which was based on human values and holistic delivery of higher education,” Prof Shameem stated.
