MARTHA Samuela never imagined that a sport she started just for fun would lead her to represent Fiji.

The 18-year-old from Rotuma is one of 22 paddlers selected to represent the country in Vaa at the 2025 Pacific Mini Games in Palau.

A student at St Joseph’s Secondary School, Samuela started paddling in February last year after being introduced to it by her friend Latina.

“I just joined for fun at first,” she said.

“It was tiring, but I enjoyed it. I got to learn new things.”

Now heading into her second year in the sport, Samuela is preparing for her first international competition.

As part of the national squad, she says the team is working hard to improve their coordination and power, and to learn how to read the waves.

“It’s all about applying your strength in the right way,” she said.

Samuela said she was nervous about the upcoming games, but more than anything, she feels grateful.

“I just want to thank God, my family, my coaches and everyone who has supported me along the way,” she said.

“I’m overwhelmed, but thankful.”

She admitted that the training can be tough at times, but said she relies on her faith to stay motivated.

“If you pray and believe in yourself, you’ll get through it,” she said.

She also shared a personal goal.

“I’m aiming to get my V1 time under three minutes,” she said with a smile.

Samuela hopes her story will inspire other young people to give new things a try.

“Just go for it,” she said.

“You never know where it can take you.”

The team includes Annette Naigulevu, Elenoa Vateitei, Faith Khelan, ris Rae Fisher, Krystelle Whippy, Nanise Soko, Nikita Rouse, Sera Havea, Sophia Rouse, Taleivini Kaimacuata, Abraham Fong, Apete Dabea, Asesela Ravudi, Goleanavanua Lesuma, Ifereimi Vesikula, Julius Campbell, Karel Ooms, Mark Acraman, Raymond Rusivakul, Sanirusi Selesitino and Semesa Patrick.
