ARTIFICIAL intelligence is rapidly transforming how people are diagnosed and treated, says Fiji College of General Practitioners president Dr Dhirendra Lal.
While speaking at the 31st FCGP conference in Nadi over the weekend, Dr Lal said their role was evolving as AI tools begin to assist in decision-making, enhance patient engagement and streamline clinical practice.
“This conference provides a timely platform to explore these innovations, discuss their ethical and practical implications and ensure they complement the human touch that defines our profession,” he said.
Dr Lal said practitioners needed to be aware of how AI tools could be incorporated into their daily work while at the same time understanding the challenges that could arise from these digital platforms.
“We have to make sure their service is safe. There are a lot of crises that we are now faced with, like HIV, drugs, NCDs and the impact on healthcare that climate change brings.
“For Fiji, NCDs is especially concerning and as general practitioners we deal with NCD-related illnesses on a daily basis.
“So we need to be able to cater for this inflow and influx using tools such as AI.”
