The Arya Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji held its annual convention last Sunday where it urged the Ministry of Education to make Hindi compulsory in schools and to provide schools with well-trained teachers to teach the language.
Speaking during the annual convention in Suva, national president Arun Deo Padarath said Hindi was not just their language, it was their heritage.
“Sabha has a policy of compulsory Hindi for its students, but has difficulty in implementing this policy as some parents reportedly do not want their children to learn Hindi,” he said.
He urged parents to encourage their children to learn to read and write in Hindi.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Professor Biman Prasad while addressing the convention, said government would be restoring the teaching of vernacular languages in schools.
