National Fire Authority is urging people to change the electrical wirings in their houses every twenty years.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane said after 20 years of constant use, electrical wiring can degrade, leading to potential safety hazards.

“The insulation on the wires can crack, dry out or become exposed, increasing the risk of electrical fires and shock,” he said.

Mr Sowane added common signs of ageing or faulty wiring include frequent circuit breaker trips, dimming or flickering lights, discoloured or scorched outlets, a burning smell, warm outlets, and old or damaged insulation.

“The NFA is urging homeowners to be vigilant in this respect and also ensure that flammable materials are stored in a safe space.”
