MORE than 60 households living at Kilikali settlement in Nasinu are set to be relocated after receiving an eviction notice last month.
The notification came from Sherani and Co, on behalf of RB Patel Group Ltd, which has plans to develop the land for commercial use.
This was confirmed in a statement by Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa, who said the ministry had conducted a socio-economic survey to gather vital data for a better understanding of the residents’ needs before the relocation process.
Mr Nalumisa said the ministry had to ensure their relocation plans were “informed, compassionate and tailored to real needs” of the residents.
“The Ministry of Housing understands the distress that this situation has caused for the residents, especially those who have lived in Kilikali for decades, hence, ministry officials have met with RB Patel Group Ltd and requested additional time to complete the survey and explore alternative solutions for the families,” Mr Nalumisa said.
“Initial survey findings indicate that several families are considering returning to their ancestral villages, while others are exploring relocation options in collaboration with iTaukei landowners.
“However, a significant barrier remains, many families lack the financial means to facilitate relocation to safer and more secure locations.”
He said of the 69 households, eight remained to be surveyed.
“The ministry is currently reviewing the survey results and will formally submit its findings to RB Patel Group Ltd, accompanied by a renewed request for an extension to the eviction timeline,” Mr Nalumisa said.
“This process may take time, but we are committed to ensuring the relocation plan is successful and beneficial for all involved.”
