A 16-year-old juvenile who had raped his 5-year-old cousin will spend time out of prison under a suspended sentence.
The incident took place in September 2023 in Nadi.
“Your final punishment of 2 years imprisonment, is suspended for a period of 8 years. You are advised of the effect of breaching a suspended punishment,” said Justice Riyaz Hamza in his May 14 ruling.
“Furthermore, Court orders that you be put under probation of the Social Welfare Department for a period of 2 years.”
“The Social Welfare Department is to immediately arrange for counselling to be provided to you in the presence of your father.”
“The Social Welfare Department is to provide all necessary assistance, support and counselling to you and your father.”
“It is also the responsibility of your father to ensure that you obey any directions given by the Social Welfare Department.”
