Chiefs and their people need to contribute to the national economy, says Ro Teimumu Kepa, Marama Roko Tui Dreketi.
In opening the new Great Council of Chief’s complex in Nasese, Ro Teimumu said this should happen to avoid waiting for Government handouts.
“Chiefs and their people must be prepared to contribute to the national economy instead of waiting for government handouts,” she said.
She also acknowledged the rising reports of social ills such as homelessness, HIV/AIDS, domestic violence, mental health and drug epidemic.
“How do chiefs deal with drug empidemic, HIV/AIDS, mental health, violence against women and children and other social ills such as homelessness that identifies the iTaukei as the highest number in the list,” she questioned.
“Chiefs cannot deal with it on their own, so proper training is needed.”
