THE Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) will return to its historic meeting grounds later this month, with its first official gathering in the newly refurbished complex scheduled for May 21–22.
GCC chairman Ratu Viliame Seruvakula confirmed the dates and addressed key issues surrounding chiefly representation, leadership succession, and the long-term financial sustainability of the council’s activities.
“There is currently only one vacant seat, following the passing of the late Turaga na Qaranivalu,” Ratu Viliame said.
“The replacement will be appointed by the bose vanua o Naitasiri, and while there is no set timeframe, the decision will follow traditional protocols.”
He also clarified that no temporary representative is appointed should a high-ranking member such as Na Vunivalu Na Tui Kaba be unable to attend due to illness or other reasons, in keeping with the council’s respect for chiefly status.
On funding, Ratu Viliame said the iTaukei Trust Fund Board remained the primary financial source for GCC meetings.
“These gatherings are budgeted annually and receive approval from the board, with the GCC’s endorsement.”
To ensure long-term viability, the chairman said the Trust Fund is replenished through managed investments, with sustainability strategies in place to support future operations.
The official reopening date of the GCC complex is yet to be announced.
