The G16 Group in Parliament has one less member following the withdrawal of MP Ketan Lal.
Mr Lal said he has informed the Speaker of his decision to withdraw support for the Opposition group led by Leader of the Opposition Inia Seruiratu and will remain an independent.
“This step has not come lightly, but I believe it is necessary to remain true to the values I uphold — integrity, fairness, and independent thinking as a servant of the people,” he said.
Mr Lal has also stepped down from the roles of Deputy Whip and Shadow Minister for Justice — roles that were tied to his membership in the Opposition Group 15.
“I also express my gratitude to the honourable MPs of the G15 group for the experiences we have shared, the lessons we have learned, and the support they have offered during our time together.”
He said he would remain in the Opposition bench where he would be guided “not by any group, but by the voices of our people”.
“I may now walk alone in Parliament, but I walk with the strength of your hopes and dreams behind me. And as long as I am in Parliament, I will remain your servant.”
