Two Fresh men’s touch rugby team is confident of a top four finish after a strong showing at the Suva Touch Rugby Association tournament held at Furnival Park yesterday.
The team played four matches, winning three and drawing one.
They beat City Roosters 15-0, Fiji Correction 13-0 in the mixed open category and in the men’s category they drew 1-1 with Eastern Hawks and later defeated City Roosters again 6-3.
Team treasurer and player Savenaca Vocea said the team’s focus now is on reaching the final.
“Fortunately, I think we’d be reaching the top four for both our categories. That puts us in a good position in the quarterfinals. Obviously, our target is to reach that finals and hopefully win the title,” he said.
Vocea said he has been with the club since 2017 and praised the inclusive nature of the sport.
“You have players that can play from a very young age playing against those much older. It’s a non-contact sport so the reach for this sport is far and wide,” he said.
The team is made up of players as young as 15 years old, with their captain believed to be around 41.
“This is a sport not many people are paid for, just through passion. We’ve all started off as strangers and now become one family,” Vocea said.
2 Fresh also plan to defend their title at the One Love tournament in Nadi next month.
The event will carry a theme of drug awareness and community outreach, reflecting the club’s efforts to promote positive values through sport.
The Suva Touch Rugby Association tournament also serves as a selection platform for players who will represent Suva in the Pacific Cup in New Zealand this November.
Meanwhile the quarter-finals will be played next week with the venue yet to be confirmed.
