“It was an error in judgment on my part.”

With those words, SODELPA general secretary Viliame Takayawa has taken back his scathing remarks against a government trade mission to Tonga.

“Upon sincere reflection, I acknowledge that the statement I made was inappropriate in both tone and medium,” Mr Takayawa said.

“I submit fully to the party’s decision that this matter be addressed at the next meeting of the working committee.”

Party leader Aseri Radrodro said the management board meeting would be held later this week.

“It was an error in judgment on my part to publicly express concerns that should have been addressed through internal coalition mechanisms and in consultation with the relevant stakeholders.”

He further admitted his actions did not reflect the standards of conduct expected of a party official in Government and extended apologies to the Prime Minister, the coalition partners, and the Fijian public.

“I extend my heartfelt and sincere apologies to the Prime Minister, the Honourable Sitiveni Rabuka, to the Government of Fiji, to our coalition partners, and most importantly to the people of Fiji, for any offence, embarrassment, or disruption my remarks may have caused.”

Mr Takayawa offered specific apologies to Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica and Ministry of Trade official Tanya Waganika, who were part of the delegation to Tonga.

He confirmed that his controversial social media post had been removed following instructions from SODELPA party leader Aseri Radrodro, and that the matter would be addressed at the party’s next working committee meeting.

Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, Mr Radrodro clarified that any final decision on the party’s position within the coalition would rest with the SODELPA management board.

“The decision of the party is taken by the management board,” Mr Radrodro said.

“So, I will not have to comment on that until after the management board sits.”
