Malaysia’s Razlan Shaqeel capped off his debut at the Extra Fiji Tennis Open in style, securing the A Grade Men’s Singles title with a commanding 2-0 victory over Papua New Guinea’s Sugar Rav Hakena yesterday.
The rising star, who came to Fiji more as a tourist than a title contender, delivered a composed and strategic performance to clinch the win in straight sets. Shaqeel’s court craft and patience proved too much for Hakena, who struggled to find rhythm in the final.
“I was surprised but I’m super happy and excited.
“I did not expect to win. My plan was to come and explore Fiji, but a win is a bonus,” he said.
The Malaysian revealed a clever tactical approach going into the final.
“I just need to drain him out.
“I played with patience. He was tough mentally, but I think he was not at his A-game.”
Despite his modesty, Shaqeel’s precision and calm under pressure earned him the title and admiration from fans and players alike.
