Residents of Wailoku in Tamavua are concerned about the rubbish spilling from the waste bin that the Suva City Council placed in their neighbourhood.

During a meeting at the Suva Civic Centre on Wednesday, a resident known as Hemant said the issue of rubbish in their area was becoming worse.

“The rubbish bin in Wailoku gets filled up and once the bin is full, it overflows,” Mr Hemant said.

“I have photos with me.

“Once the rubbish spills, we see stray dogs getting the baby diapers from that rubbish bin and pulling them out into yards and streets.”

He said people were also throwing rubbish in the nearby creek.

He requested the SCC to consider putting another waste bin at the site.

SCC acting director planning and development Filipo Tawake assured Mr Hemant that another bin would be placed in Wailoku.

“There have been requests from residents there,” Mr Tawake said.

“Just for your information, this subsidised service actually receives a grant from the Government to enable us to extend this service to the extended area.

“So we work according to the budget that the Government gives us.

“Sometimes we go out of our way just to try and keep the environment clean.

“But duly noted, we will consider the Wailoku area if we can put one more bin.”

He said clearing waste bins was costly and SCC was working according to their budget.

“These things are not cheap also.

“To clear a bin at one time is about $200. We clear the Wailoku bin three to four times a week.

“So it’s costing the council a lot of money.

“We take into account the environment, we also take into account the grant that we get from the Government.”
