Government has hired an Australian counsel to take its case to the Supreme Court to seek an opinion on the interpretation and application of the amendment provisions of the 2013 Constitution.

Australian senior counsel Bret Walker was given the approval by Cabinet for legal representation in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Chaudhry said the Government needed to move fast if any constitutional changes were planned before the next general election.

He said under the current Constitution, government’s mandate lasts only four years, and elections must be held once the term ends.

“Elections will have to be held unless the Constitution is changed,” Mr Chaudhry said.

“You can’t be governing without a mandate.

“If they want to amend the Constitution, they should go about it and do something quickly.”
