BA Women’s Football Club has officially embarked on its historic journey to the OFC Women’s Champions League in Tahiti, but their dream debut has not come without early challenges.

The team departed from Nadi International Airport with high hopes, ready to represent Fiji on the regional stage.

However, just hours into the journey, complications began. Two players, Lantana Alisi and Mereoni Tora, were grounded in Nadi due to pending police clearance paperwork.

Their absence immediately narrowed the squad.

Upon arrival at Papeete International Airport in Tahiti, the situation escalated when four players and one team official were detained by local immigration authorities due to passport and documentation issues.

The atmosphere turned tense, but swift diplomatic and logistical efforts were put into motion.

Ba FA confirmed in a statement the players and official were released to join camp.

“Thanks to the commendable coordination between Fiji Immigration, Tahiti Immigration, and the Fiji Football Association, the detained individuals were released and allowed to join the team in camp on Tuesday evening.

Their arrival lifted the spirits of the team, which had initially assembled with just 11 outfield players.”

Ba Women have been drawn in Group A of the OFC Women’s Champions League, alongside Penama Tigers FC (Vanuatu), Henderson Eels FC (Solomon Islands), and Tupapa Maraerenga FC (Cook Islands). It’s a competitive pool, and Ba will need to hit the ground running as they open their campaign against Penama Tigers this Sunday.

Despite the setbacks, head coach Charlene Lockington remains positive.

Coincidentally, the Penama Tigers are also facing logistical difficulties of their own, with several players reportedly held up in Fiji due to visa issues.

OFC competition regulations require a minimum of 16 registered players for tournament participation, and Ba will be hoping all remaining players receive clearance in time for kickoff.

This is Ba’s first appearance in the OFC Women’s Champions League, and the team is determined to represent Fiji with pride despite the rough start.

Coach Lockington has also made a heartfelt appeal for financial support. “If you’re able to help in any way, please reach out and support these girls who are flying the flag for all of us.”

The road may have started bumpy, but Ba Women are focused, faithful, and fired up for the challenge ahead in Tahiti.
