A TOTAL of $92,310 was raised for cancer patients last year from tea fundraiser events hosted by different organisations and lead sponsors.

This was announced at the launch of the 2025 Bushell’s Fiji’s Biggest Morning Tea (BFBMT) at the Motibhai Group head office in Suva yesterday.

Motibhai’s marketing manager Abraham Gomes is urging business houses and organisations to host morning tea events between May and June to join the battle against cancer.

Fiji Cancer Society CEO Benlinda Chan said this year 78 new cases of cancer were reported in the Central Division and 23 in the Northern Division.

“With the alarming statistics on deaths caused by non-communicable diseases (NCDs), the BFBMT campaign plays an important role in spreading cancer awareness and advocacy,” Mr Gomes said.

“While NCDs account for 80 per cent of deaths in the country, cancer is the third largest killer.”

Fiji Cancer Society’s Belinda Chan echoed these sentiments and highlighted the impact of cancer on Fijian families.

“Many Fijian families are affected by cancer, either directly or indirectly,” Ms Chan said.

She emphasised the financial and emotional stress on patients and families, and the disruption to home life as patients adapt to a “new normal” after treatment.

“Every contribution counts, whether it’s $40 or $40,000.”
