FIJI recorded more than 920,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emission reduction units between July 2019 and December 2020, says Minister for Forestry Alitia Bainivalu.

Providing an update on Fiji’s commitment to reduce its carbon emissions in Parliament on Monday, Ms Bainivalu said the recorded reductions was part of government’s agreement with the World Bank managed Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF).

“In January 2021, the Fiji Government signed an emission payment agreement contract with the Forest Carbon Partnership Facility which is managed by the World Bank covering Viti Levu, Vanua Levu and Taveuni,” she said.

She said following the completion of the audited National Framework for Monitoring and Reporting to Support the Verification of the Net Level of Greenhouse Gas Emission, emissions recorded were well above the required mandated units.

“From the period beginning July 11, 2019 to 31 December 2020 has been conducted and the monitoring report has been audited by an independent third party.

“The report records a net reduction of greenhouse gas emission of 922,828 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent and is an aggregate of the emissions reduction units generated by the monitored program and activities that cost the change in forest cover which are the reduction in rate of deforestation by 82 per cent.”

Ms Bainivalu said forest degradation activities were also reduced by 16 percent.
