Police equipped with advanced machine to combat maritime crimes

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has acknowledged the continuous support of the Japanese Government towards his team which has helped with their respective duties.

Today, the Japanese Government funded and donated  a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) known to be an advanced underwater robotic machine to the Fiji Police to help them assess potentially dangerous situations from a safe position.

In a release, police said the assistance included the helping hand of the UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime RegionaL)  Maritime Crime Program to equip law enforcement with underwater technology.

“This is  supported and funded by the Embassy of Japan further strengthening collaborative efforts of addressing maritime crimes,” police said.

Japan’s Ambassador to Fiji Rokuichiro Michii reaffirmed his Government’s support towards the Fiji Police Force through the UNODC and relevant agencies in enhancing policing capabilities and readiness in addressing shared challenges of maritime crime.

UNODC program coordinator Maritime Crime Pacific Ocean Madushani Nawarathna said strengthening maritime law enforcement capabilities through various programs such as the ROV training, reaffirmed their commitment in ensuring long term sustainable cooperation in addressing transnational maritime crimes.

Mr Tudravu said his team, for many years benefitted through capacity building support with the equipping of specialised resources and training for officers.
