Naitasiri’s paramount chief, Turaga na Qaranivaly Ratu Inoke Takiveikata was laid to rest yesterday by the Vanua of Matanikitu.
Mourners from across the Naitasiri province gathered to pay their final respects, including traditional leaders and representatives of various chiefly households from around the country.
Apimeleki Tola, chairman of the National Land Commission (Veitarogi Vanua), described Ratu Inoke as a man of integrity. He recalled the chief’s involvement in national healing efforts following the political turmoil of 2000.
“When we look at the Muanikau Accord, his name stands out for his role in reconciliation that led to the release of parliamentarians who were held hostage at the time,” Mr Tola said.
Ratu Inoke was installed as the Qaranivalu on March 26, 1999, following traditional consultations held in Navuso. He went on to serve in various capacities in government, including as Assistant Roko, and as Minister for Regional Development and Multi-Ethnic Affairs in the interim Qarase government. He was later appointed to the Senate from 2001 to 2004.
