JOHN Tawai, a former student of Levuka Public School (LPS), was all smiles yesterday as he watched his son Willie Roko take part in the Fiji Finals opening parade in Suva.
Tawai and other parents from Ovalau arrived early morning to support LPS students who led the flag-raising ceremony as colour bearers and band members for the first time.
“It’s a very proud moment for all of us,” Tawai said.
“This is the first time for a maritime school to be part of this parade as colour parties. It’s history for LPS and for Levuka.”
Tawai’s son, William Roko, is a senior student in form six and also a member of the school band. He is competing in the senior boys high jump.
“Willie is a dedicated boy. He’s committed to his training, schoolwork and church. I’ve seen how hard he has worked and I’m proud of what he’s doing,” Tawai said.
He shared that Roko also competed in last year’s boys intermediate high jump and has been training hard for his events.
Tawai said the invitation to lead the colour party parade came after their impressive performance at the zone meet at St John’s College.
“It’s a different atmosphere. You can feel the excitement. Everyone’s thankful to God for this opportunity.”
With strong community and parental support behind them, Tawai believes the LPS students will perform their best.
“We’re just proud to be here.”
