FIIJI under-19 cricket coach Sanjiv Dubey says the team is ready for the ICC East Asia-Pacific World Cup Division One Qualifier in Japan.
The team left the country yesterday full of confidence and hope as they aim to secure a place in the ICC U19 World Cup in Zimbabwe, Nigeria.
Dubey named a 14-member squad, which includes only four players who were part of the team that toured Darwin last year.
The rest are making their debut at this level.
“This is a young side, but they are talented and hungry to do well,” Dubey said.
Josateki Malani will captain the team.
He was part of the team that finished behind Japan in Darwin and helped Fiji qualify for this stage of the competition.
The full squad includes, Josateki Malani (captain), Moceidaveta Manara, Sefanaia Matai, Meli Vakaloloma, Manav Narayan, Waisale Bale, Joeli Qalo Ki Moala, Peni Mawi, Cakacaka Yacokilodoni, Jone Vakatawa, Maika Kamikamica, Jonacani Tagilala, Kitioni Keperieli and Temo Vakaloloma.
Dubey said preparations started in January with a three-week training camp.
“We worked on upskilling the boys and selected the best 14 out of 30. The team has trained hard, and we are ready,” he said.
He added that self-belief would be key for Fiji.
“Fijians are known for their heart and belief. We may be underdogs, but we are going there to compete.”
Fiji will face host Japan tomorrow, followed by Papua New Guinea on Saturday.
From these three teams only one team will qualify for the World Cup.
