TRAINING on the beach in Kadavu for the Fiji Finals has generated a thirst for greatness within the Vunisea Secondary School athletics team.

The school is eager to participate in the national event and coaching official Jovesa Latianara explained how the student athletes have prepared for it.

“In Kadavu, there’s no proper gym like the one in Suva, what we only have is the normal training in the ground,” Latianara said.

“We also managed to do some sand drills, whereby we went to some of the beaches and do some training.

“With a few days left for us to take part in the Coca-Cola (Games), the kids are preparing very well and are looking forward to the three days of competition for the Fiji Finals.”

The team arrived in Suva for the Maritime Zone athletics competition and took part after a lapse of four years.

“After a lapse of four years, we are taking part in the Maritime Zone and we managed to win the Maritime Zone yesterday,” he shared.

The team walked away as its overall champions with 20 gold, 10 silver and seven bronze medals — a total of 37.

They entered the zone competition and subsequently the Fiji Finals with 28 athletes and 10 teachers.

He thanked the team’s supporters in Suva for their help and extended a call for support to the school’s former students for their backing at the games. The Fiji Finals will start tomorrow and end on Saturday.
