OPPOSITION Leader Inia Seruiratu has called for public consultations to be genuine and inclusive to ensure all communities are fairly represented in the decision-making process.

Mr Seruiratu said public consultations must not be politicised or used as a formality.

“Consultation is important, but it must be genuine,” Mr Seruiratu said.

He raised the issue after noting that the consultation venues had failed to attract members of the public.

He said many citizens, particularly those in rural and remote areas, may not be able to attend formal consultations.

“Many people won’t be able to attend, so as their representative, I’ll ensure their voices are heard,” he said.

Mr Seruiratu urged the Government to listen with the right intentions and take feedback seriously, instead of dismissing them based on political lines.

“I hope the consultations aren’t politicised, and that the Government listens with the right intentions.

“People deserve to be heard, especially on issues that directly impact their livelihoods.”

He said the Opposition had a duty to ensure that concerns raised by the people were brought to the attention of Parliament and the relevant ministries.

“As representatives of the people, it’s our role to make sure their views are included and respected,” Mr Seruiratu said.

He said meaningful engagement and transparency were key to building trust and making sure development is truly people-centered.
