The Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s chances of securing a spot in the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific top six are still alive, according to head coach Glen Jackson when speaking to the media ahead of their round nine match against the Highlanders.
With just seven games remaining this season, Jackson believes that winning the next three will put them in a strong position to finish in the top six.
“We’re only playing teams fighting for that top six position in the next few weeks,” Jackson said.
“If we win three, we’ll be right there, we will be equal.”
Jackson acknowledged the unpredictability of the competition, noting that calculating the precise outcomes is a challenging task.
“Trying to do the maths on this competition is near impossible,” he admitted. “But if we focus on our own performance and get those three wins, we’ll have a good shot.”
Maintaining a positive attitude is key to the Drua’s approach.
Jackson emphasised the importance of staying focused and motivated, both for the players and supporters.
“We’re not out of this competition, and it’s crucial for the team and the supporters to keep that positive attitude. We want to repay everyone’s support with strong on-field performances,” Jackson added.
As the Drua push towards the top six, Jackson reflected on the contribution of players set to leave the club at the end of this Super Rugby season.
Iosefo Masi, Caleb Mantz and Selestino Ravutaumada – all heading to France – have all made significant contributions and Jackson praised their efforts.
“Masi has worked incredibly hard to get back to his form after his injury,” he said.
“I think someone like Masi has given so much to the club, as has Stino and Caleb, so we just want them to go out there and enjoy what they have given to the club in the last few years.”
The coaching staff and team have encouraged the trio to enjoy their final matches with the Fijian Drua and to give their best both now and in the next chapter of their careers.
The Drua take on the Highlanders tomorrow at 7.05pm at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.
