The family is the first line of defence against HIV.
Speaking with this newspaper, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Pita Nacuva said the fight against the HIV epidemic must begin within the home.
“HIV is another issue we are facing today,” Mr Nacuva said.
“During my time as Speaker, the major health concerns were illnesses like measles, which were manageable.
“But now, HIV is surging, and I think the issue lies within the homes,”
Mr Nacuva said parents hold primary responsibility in nurturing and educating their children.
He acknowledged the roles of the church and the education system but reiterated that family was where the foundation for healthy behaviour was built.
He shared details of a “family lab” that he and his wife run.
“My wife and I run a ‘family lab’ where we teach the youths before they go out and start families.
“We encourage them to pass on these teachings to their children.”
He further added that in traditional households, the father plays a critical role in monitoring and guiding the actions of his children.
Addressing young people directly, Nacuva advised them to seek wisdom and knowledge.
“My advice to the youths of today struggling with this issue is to seek wisdom.
“In the Bible, we see King Solomon, who at 17 asked God for wisdom and became known as the wisest king. Youths must educate themselves on these matters.”
Mr Nacuva stated that the phrase “prevention is better than cure” applies to the family’s responsibility in addressing HIV, more than ever.
