THE Kaiviti Silktails claimed their first home victory in the Jersey Flegg Cup rugby league competition, edging out the Illawarra Dragons 23-22 at Churchill Park in Lautoka yesterday.

The home side also won the prestigious Apisai Toga Bowl.

The Silktails capitalised on the hot weather, increasing their intensity in both attack and defence to take a 16-6 lead at halftime.

Mikaele Senibua starred with a hat-trick of tries, while Senivalati Vunibola successfully converted twice. The Dragons managed only one try in the first half, scored by Toby Rumble and converted by Eden Hodges.

The Dragons came out stronger in the second half, adjusting their attacking strategy. Rumble crossed for his second try, with Hodges adding the extras.

They continued to build momentum and turned the game around in the 69th minute when Jesse Williams scored their third try, and Clay Baldock’s successful conversion to see the visitors leading 18-16.

With eight minutes left on the clock, Taveuni native and birthday boy Adrea Ramabuke powered over for a crucial try, which Vunibola converted to restore the Silktails’ advantage.

However, the Dragons responded quickly, with Williams scoring again to level the match. Baldock missed the conversion, leaving the scores level.

In the dying moments, smart play from the Silktails saw Meli Setaki slot a field goal, sealing a thrilling 23-22 victory.

Silktails head coach Timoci Duve praised his team’s effort.

“We started well and got on the front foot early. We knew the Dragons were a strong team, so we prepared for that challenge.”

The Silktails will now face the Newcastle Knights in their next match at Lawaqa Park next week.

“The Knights will be tough, but we will prepare well for that,” coach Duve said after yesterday’s match.
