REWA-born Kalesi Rokovusoni has been selling food parcels for about 21 years.

An essential job that some look down upon but it is something she is passionate about.

Known as Qei by customers around Suva City, Kalesi has been selling at a space provided near the Government Buildings for more than two decades.

“I began selling here in 2004,” said the 62-year-old.

“Everybody in Suva knows me and my business. Everyone who eats my food loves it.

“This small space was given by the Government and we have a licence. With money I earn from the business, I am able to earn money to support my family and my children and grandchildren.

“Sometimes I get sick but I’m committed to my business. Basically, I cook all my dishes from home and sell them here while I also offer different types of beverages to suit my customers’ needs.”

She began toying with the idea of starting a business since she moved to Suva more than 30 years ago.

“I think the idea came to mind because I just couldn’t bear the thought of staying idle at home.”

With her loving and bubbly personality and great tasting dishes, Qei is a hit with customers, mostly civil servants.

“I change my dishes everyday, .

“I am committed to serving my customers. For the love of this business I still come to sell at around 4pm when my regular customers have left.”

A daily prayer to the almighty before starting the day is a must for Kaleni. She does this diligently to thank the Lord for her business and its successes over the years.

“When I wake up in the morning, I pray because my Lord gives me a new breath of life every morning. After praying, I immediately start preparing my dishes.

“With the money I earn, I’ve been able to put my children to school, pay my bills and give my tithe to the church.”

Qei delivers food orders around Suva before making her way to serve her customers at the Government Buildings.

“I normally walk, sometimes when I have money, I take a cab to deliver my goods. I tell them, “you wait, I’ll come there”.

“I feel good when people tell me that they love my food, it makes me happy. Sometimes people order six or seven bottles of chutney which tells me I’m preparing my goods correctly with love”.

One thing is for sure, anyone interested in trying Qei’s delicacies will not be disappointed.
