SUGGESTIONS have been made for staggered hour work schemes to better manage traffic flow.

During a public consultation on traffic congestion along the Suva-Nausori corridor this week, residents along the corridor voiced their concerns about the persistent problems that have plagued the main highway.

Kaylash Chandra said the proposed solutions to control traffic would not work unless a solution of international standards was applied.

“International standards, staggered opening hours,” Mr Chandra said.

“How about Walu Bay? People who work in Walu Bay start work at six in the morning.

“If we even have school children starting at 9am, they can finish at four or 3.30pm. School holidays, we can shorten to compensate for the hours if they want to be compensated.”

Mr Chandra said hours could also be changed for those who work in the business district.

“There’s nothing wrong with going from six to three, seven till four, eight to five,” he added.

Mr Chandra said this was one way of easing traffic congestion in a cheaper way, whether short term or long term.

“Otherwise, we don’t have the infrastructure.

“We cannot have those double layer roads in Fiji. That’s too far, maybe two, 300 years.

“So, it would be nice to look at staggered opening hours. Countries like Germany, and other larger countries, are doing that.”
