THE construction of a new $1.2million fire station along the Coral Coast will ensure resorts and hotels are better equipped to deal with fires.
Local Government Minister Parveen Kumar officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony of the new fire station in Korolevu, Sigatoka, on Friday.
“The Government firmly believes that fire and other emergency management services should be easily accessible to all Fijians and this fire station will enhance the provisions of such services to all Fijians in this area,” he said.
“The region of Korolevu and Coral Coast have witnessed and experienced some of the huge hotel fires like the Naviti Resort Fire, Natavora and the Warwick fire, which had devastating impact to hotels and the tourism sector in the Coral Coast.”
He said by the time fire fighters from Sigatoka had responded to the fires, huge parts of hotels were already destroyed.
After the completion of the project, the Korolevu Fire Station will also have an ambulance to service people in the area.
The project is anticipated to finish by September.
