The G9 group of Independent Members of Parliament joined the People’s Coalition Government without setting any preconditions, says Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
Asked if there were any specific terms or agreements involved in the G9’s acceptance of ministerial and assistant ministerial portfolios, Mr Rabuka stated, “No. They said in Parliament that, as Independent MPs, they would work with government in the interest of the people.”
Discussing how the G9’s inclusion would align with the government’s strategic priorities, Mr Rabuka expressed confidence in their ability to contribute effectively due to their experience.
“Naivalurua is a former Police Commissioner and should glide in well, and the Police Strategic Plan 2011–2050 was his,” Mr Rabuka said.
The Prime Minister further noted that the mechanisms within the government, including support from seasoned civil servants would ensure a smooth transition for the new appointees.
This approach, he explained, allows the G9 ministers and assistant ministers to integrate seamlessly into their roles and contribute to the administration’s ongoing initiatives.
Minister for Climate Change and Environment Mosese Bulitavu confirmed the absence of demands or conditions during their discussions with the Prime Minister.
“We were approached individually, and no demands were made,” Mr Bulitavu said.
Before the Coalition Government was formed following the 2022 General Election, the National Federation Party and Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) entered into a Coalition Agreement with The People’s Alliance by setting terms and conditions.
