Watch out for the Blue Wiggers

Ni Hao from Hong Kong!

My phone alarm woke me up a bit too early yesterday.

I checked the time and it was 5am, it felt like I just slept for an hour or two.

Then, I realised my phone was still on Fiji time so basically it was still 1am here in Hong Kong.

It took me another hour to fall off to sleep and then I was up again by 4am working on my early stories.

Time difference isn’t that easy to deal with and it requires a bit of time before your body gets adjusted to the new environment.

Hong Kong is four hours behind Fiji so it requires a lot of planning to be able to meet the daily newspaper deadlines.

On Tuesday night, I bumped into some Fijian fans looking for tickets to the tournament.

This group call themselves the Blue Wiggers.

You might have seen them on TV. They are the ones with funky costumes and blue wigs.

I remember whenever members of this group come on the TV, the gang at work would yell “overstay”.

Actually the Blue Wiggers come from all over the world. It’s a group of very dedicated Fiji 7s fans. It’s great to see that passion for Fiji 7s in them.

So look out for them this weekend. They have come prepared with some surprises.

The team had its second day of training yesterday starting with a scrimmaging session against Spain.

Samisoni Viriviri had his first session with the side and looks comfortable getting into the formation.

Skipper Osea Kolinisau had to attend the captains’ photo session at midday while coach Ben Ryan took part in the press conference after lunch.

In the afternoon, the side had a gym session to pump in a bit of power.

The weather looks bit gloomy and the forecast is, it may rain this weekend.

For the past few years, Hong Kong 7s has experienced rain and it may be the same this year.

Don’t ask me about the temperature because my fingers are feeling numb as I type this at the Causeway Bay Sports Ground.

And food, it’s McDonalds every day.

Until tomorrow, zaijian.
