FIJI’S AFL team is ready to compete in the 2024 Pacific Cup, marking an important milestone for the sport in a country where rugby and soccer dominate.
The competition is set to take place in Australia next week on Noveber 14-16.
Led by a mix of experienced and emerging players, the squad has undergone seven weeks of intensive training, despite facing funding and sponsorship challenges.
The team includes eight players with international experience from previous World Cups, nine players promoted through Fiji’s AFL pathway, and eleven first-time representatives.
Head coach Alipate Navuso stated: “We have a strong base with our experienced players, while the younger players bring energy and potential.”
Funding has been a persistent hurdle with AFL considered a minor sport in Fiji.
While local sponsor Flame Tree has stepped in, many players have had to pay their own transport, food, and accommodation to attend training.
“A lot of the boys have been covering their own costs,” he said.
“It’s a big commitment, but they’ve been showing up every day.”
The team has set a bold target – to win the Pacific Cup.
Despite the financial challenges, the players have committed fully, with full attendance throughout the seven-week training program.
“Our ambition is clear, we’re here to compete.
“We’ve trained hard and aim to bring the cup home.”
The squad acknowledged the support of families, friends, and community members who have backed the team’s journey.
As Fiji’s AFL team heads into the Pacific Cup, they carry with them the hopes of establishing a stronger future for the sport in the country.
