PLAYING against Scotland at Murrayfield poses a formidable challenge for the FIJI Water Flying Fijians as emphasised by coach Mick Byrne.
He stresses the importance of physical readiness and a strong defensive strategy to secure a win in this match.
Byrne expresses gratitude to Scotland rugby for facilitating this transition and ensuring the players are prepared for the game.
“Its been very good so far. Great having ability to come in on Friday (last week), thanks to Scotland rugby for that,” said Byrne.
“You know, to be able to come in on Friday and get acclimatised and work our way through our jet lag issues, which were quite huge, but we managed to be through that.”
Byrne says training sessions have been encouraging, with Monday’s session showing the players in high spirits and ready for the upcoming clash.
“I think physically, we are prepared. Our training started on Monday, which was awesome. They really got out and are really in good spirits.
“And then yesterday (Tuesday), we trained to pace with a bit of contact and a lot of good energy around always excited by the clash that’s in front of them.
“It will also be a challenge playing Scotland at Murrayfield. It’s a massive ask and a massive task.”
Byrne recognises the quality of the Scottish team under the guidance of coach Gregor Townsend, known for his unique perspective on the game.
“Scotland is a good side with a great coach Gregor. He saw the game differently to most players that I knew and got a lot of respect for him as a coach, and he’s coaching Scotland really well.
“They will play a good, solid brand of rugby. We know we’re going to be stretched. He has a good team and they will challenge you on the edge, but our defence must be really good also to counter them.”
With a sell-out crowd expected at Murrayfield, the home team will have strong support.
Despite this, Byrne encourages Fiji fans to attend the game and show their backing for the team.
“We just know the fans will turn up, we know we won’t have most of the support, but we’ll probably have the noise from the crowd for sure, and we’re really looking forward to seeing those blue flags in the crowd.”
The Flying Fijians will play Scotland at 5.30am this Sunday.
They will take on Wales at 1.40am on Monday, November 11 at the Millennium Stadium before playing Spain at 2am on the November 17 in their third Test.
The Flying Fijians will then take on Ireland in their final Test on the November 24 at 3.10am.
