The selection of the President of Fiji should not be politically driven, says Cakaudrove chief, the Tui Wailevu Ratu Joseva Maivalili.
He said it was crucial for parliamentarians to choose the next president based on merit and integrity, rather than political affiliation.
“The presidency is a position that should unite us, not divide us,” he said.
“We need a leader who will represent all Fijians and uphold our values.”
He said Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere’s successor should have principles.
“I believe the next successor should show compassion, humility, honesty and be a visionary leader to take this nation forward with a stable style of leadership.”
He said the next president must fear God and respected the teachings of Christianity.
His comments come as the vanua of Lalagavesi rallied behind their chief, the Tui Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, who is Government’s nominee for the post.
A member of Ratu Naiqama’s chiefly family, Semi Cagilaba, said this was the right time for Tui Cakau to be the next President of Fiji.
“In these challenging times, we need someone who understands the struggles of our people,” he said, saying Ratu Naiqama would put the interest of others ahead of his.
“We are confident that he will bring positive change.”
Tui Laucala Sakiusa Luvenitoga also expressed his support for the Tui Cakau while the Tui Nadogo expressed a belief that chiefs should have a say in the selection of Fiji’s next president.
Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali said the Great Council of Chiefs should be included in the process to ensure that the custodians of the land were represented.
