IN the spirit of Fiji Day, market vendors in Suva wore blue to commemorate the country’s 54th anniversary of independence.
Tourists arriving by cruise ship at the Suva Port joined the celebrations, dancing and enjoying the entertainment.
While officiating at the event, Suva City Council chair Tevita Boseiwaqa said through the Government, the council was working with stakeholders to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensure no Fijian would be left behind.
“We want to promote collaboration, and we are working towards that because independence to us means unity,” Mr Boseiwaqa said.
“Which is why we are having it here at the Suva Market, and we want to involve the grassroots people.”
Suva United Market Vendor Association general secretary Ilisapeci Viriki thanked the SCC for funding the event.
“This was last-minute organising, but with the help of the council workers, we were able to pull it off today with the decorations and the live entertainment.”
The main Fiji Day celebrations will be held tomorrow at Labasa’s Subrail Park where President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere will be officiating.
