The process of the re-introduction of the scaling of the national examination has been approved by Cabinet.

Education Minister Aseri Radrodro told Parliament on Thursday that public consultation will be undertaken to get people’s views on the process.

He said the scaling system would be introduced subject to Cabinet endorsement in the 2025 education year after the completion of the consultation and policy adjustments and policy preparation at the school level to ensure transition.

Mr Radrodro said the scaling in national examination made fair representation of student performances.

“Most of us have come through this scaling system before it was disbanded in 2015,” Mr Radrodro said.

“It helps to normalise examination scores to account for varying degrees of difficulty across subjects and exams.”

He said scaling also addressed disparities.

“This year, most of the students that are in the rural and maritime areas, they seem to have lessened because they tend to migrate to the schools in towns and cities because of the thinking that the school system here would provide them better opportunities.

“So, that is the reason why we are trying to reintroduce the scaling system.”

Mr Radrodro said many countries use the form of scaling in their national examination system to ensure consistency and fairness.

“Therefore, by re-introducing the scaling system in Fiji, it is in alignment with the international practices in student assessment, ensuring that students results are credible and comparable at global level.”
