Fiji powerlifters ready for Nauru

The Fiji Powerlifting Federation has named its national team which will compete at the Oceania Regional Powerlifting Championships 2024 in Nauru next month.

The team will consist of Vivaan Patel in the men’s sub-junior under 83kg event, Vinesh Chand in the men’s open U74kg, Faga Varea for the men’s open under 93kg, Muzammil Ali in the men’s open U93kg, Viliame Lagonilakeba in the men’s open U120kg and team captain Kurt Wise in the men’s open U120kg.

Team officials include head coach Eric Jioje, technical coach Ryan Bale, assistant coach Salacieli Koroi and team manager and doctor Jessa May Bancod.

While Bancod and Koroi travel to Nauru with the team, Jioje and Bale are non-travelling officials.

Viliame Lagonilakeba, in his capacity as president of the Fiji Powerlifting Federation, says the six lifters were chosen after a rigorous selection process.

“Our final selections were based on recent competition performances and other crucial factors, ensuring a team that is not only strong but also well-prepared for this highly competitive stage.”

Lagonilakeba adds their outing will not be an easy task.

“Competing in Nauru will be no easy feat.”

“I believe the exposure and experience our athletes will gain from this competition will be second to none.”

He acknowledged the athletes and their balancing of commitments outside the sport.

“Our athletes are confident and well-prepared for the challenge, and they are looking forward to testing their strength and skill against the very best in the region.”

The regional championships will be held from the October 30- November 2.
