Cultivating a greater interest in golf for Fiji’s younger generation is one way in which the sport can gain higher prominence locally and in the Pacific region.

Shaun Hwang, the Fiji Golf Club’s vice-president, shared these sentiments at the Fiji Golf Club in Vatuwaqa, Suva yesterday.

“We need sports in the young generation. In the Pacific, we need the young people and the younger generation to join,” he said.

He added the young potential players aspiring to take up the sport could look up to renowned golfers such as former world no. 1 golfer, Fijian-born Vijay Singh, for instance.

“We have a successful golf player like Vijay Singh, and we have to develop on where to go”.

Hwang, who has played golf for the past decade, makes appearances at the club on weekends with other golfers and has lived in Fiji for the past 28 years.

Meanwhile, the Stableford Event competition, sponsored by Nagel Goundan, started yesterday.

There were a total of 60 starters as the tourney began and will take place every weekend.

Yesterday’s weather was generally overcast, later clearing as golfers and enthusiasts flocked to the golf club in Vatuwaqa to participate.
