THE Department of Education in the Northern Division will strive to produce 35 per cent of candidates from the North for the toppers scholarship.

This was revealed by senior education officer North Letila Mataitoga during a presentation at the North heads of department meeting on Friday last week.

She also revealed a roving principal will be dispatched to schools to learn of weaknesses and advise teachers on ways of improving their teaching techniques.

She said part of the ministry’s aim this year was to create a racial balance of teachers in schools for the sake of effectively teaching conversational language classes to students.

Mrs Mataitoga told officials the ministry aimed to build better schools that could withstand category five hurricanes.

She said the ministry intended to provide solar power for remote schools without electricity.

“We intend to provide schools with well-equipped science laboratories. This year we have removed all vocational classes from schools as we now have a technical college in Labasa where all students can be referred. The ministry also intends to provide all kindargarten schools with certified teachers for quality learning.”
