RKS aims to regain lost glory

FORMER track kings Ratu Kadavulevu School is hoping to regain lost glory as promising results were produced by athletes on day one of the inter-house at the school grounds yesterday.

RKS used to rule the tracks in 1980s and the 1990s and this year’s inter-house is where the coaches are looking to select a squad that will help the school get the zone title as well as a better showing in the Coke Games.

In the records that fell, Savenaca Matalau of Cakau House set a new school record in the intermediate boys discus event. His throw was 33.61 metres surpassing the old record of 21.47m.

Young Maika Nasilasila broke two records in the junior boys. In the shot put, he threw 14.38m breaking the old record of 11.3m. In the javelin he threw 50 metres almost 10 metres more than the old record.

Senior sprinter Taitusi Turaga ran an impressive 10.9 seconds in the 100 metres.

RKS media relations officer Jekope Vunilasi said the students had prepared well.

“It was in the 1990s when RKS dominated the Coca-Cola Games. Our revival has started but it will take time,” he said.

“The first step for us will be to dethrone traditional rivals Queen Victoria at the zone meet and then move on to the Coke Games.

“I am sure we have some medal prospects. I am also happy that a lot of parents turned up to support the students.”

Day Two of the RKS inter-house will be held today.
