SECOND hand clothes company Value City has donated $53,020 in cash and kind to WOWS Kids Fiji.
Company managing director Vera Chute made the comment at the launch of the 2024 National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and WOWS Kids Fiji Fundraising initiative at the Tongan community hall in Suva.
“In 2023, around this time July, I attended this very same launch in the same building, listening to Sina and some other mothers, and to think that these very children, some of whom had not even begun their lives, and yet they were facing and battling cancer.”
Ms Chute said every year the staff of Value City are asked to partake in a fundraiser to benefit a charity. In August last year, the branches and warehouses of Value City got organised to donate to WOWS Kids Fiji .
“We have 16 branches across Fiji and three major warehouses, and we run about 200 staff.
“Each branch has the chance to raise their own funds, create their own awareness, get guest speakers from the Cancer Society or WOWS or medical personnel who deal with oncology, and have morning tea with them.”
Ms Chute said these were the only times staff members were asked to contribute their own expenses.
“Whatever amount the branches raise, the company matches it.
“So last year, the branches managed to get $26,620 and we matched it.
“In our way, we help to raise advocacy on this issue.”
