Votualevu College created history on Saturday after the school’s Under-16 girls team emerged winners against Nasikawa Vision College in the semi-finals of the Western Secondary Schools Under-16 Raluve competition.

The win puts them in the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby Union national quarter-finals for the first time in the school’s history.

Despite both teams locked 15-all at full-time, the Nadi-based school was declared the winner as they scored more tries in the match.

This Saturday, Votualevu College faces Sigatoka Methodist College in the final of the West Secondary Schools’ Under-16 Raluve competition at Lawaqa Park.

Team manager and schoolteacher Walesi Buadromo said it was all about developing the students’ interest.

“Most importantly, it is about us having that mentality and if they have that interest in them, it is easier to groom them further,” she said.

Buadromo acknowledged the primary schools where the interest of these students were identified and put to the test.

“We thank the primary schoolteachers, these girls brought all their skills along and it is only right for us to nurture that interest.

“This is the first time we have qualified for the nationals and is quite an achievement for the school.

“We had rugby teams before but we did not manage to go this far in the competition.”

Buadromo added the girls have been preparing well for the final.
