Methamphetamine is now infiltrating schools in Fiji.
In 2023, four methamphetamine cases were reported at a few schools and in Term 1, this year three cases have already been reported.
Apart from meth, students have also been found to be using and abusing common drugs like tobacco, alcohol and cannabis in schools.
This was highlighted by the Education Assistant Minister, Iliesa Vanawalu during his speech at the launch of this year’s International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (IDADAIT) Week at Suva Grammar School on Monday.
Mr Vanawalu said the Substance Abuse Advisory Council (SAAC) reported that in 2022, there were 2900 cases of other drugs in schools while in 2023 there were 3700 cases.
“If wrong decisions are made by students, there is a possibility of them not completing their education and ending up at places they do not want,” he said.
“SAAC provided intervention through counselling and mentoring; hence the risks are minimised.
“Fiji is not free, we need to be more vigilant to protect our children and youths from this drug pandemic. The effects of drugs is experienced right across the communities.”
He said that those in the drug industry are focused more on the profit they gain through their illegal trade but the cost to children’s health – the father, the mother and family cannot fathom as more harm is created.
Studies shows that people who use or abuse drugs or other illicit substances suffer from chronic health problems which affects their lungs, heart, liver, kidney and their brain.
“According to data provided to the Ministry, 8000 people were referred to St Giles in 2023 due to mental health related issues.
“The IDADAIT week awareness is making sure students do not use or abuse drugs or else they will end up at St Giles Hospital.”
He reminded students that they only have one life to live and that they are responsible for it.
“If you decide not to use drugs, you will be achieving education goals, you will be healthy and will make your family proud.
“As your Assistant Minister, I am urging you all to stay away from drugs.”
Students and teachers from other schools and invited guests were also part of the launch.
The theme for this year’s IDADAIT week is “Be responsible, make the right choice and stay away from drugs”.
