Fiji 7s legend has taken up the position as the new Indian 7s national men’s coach.
Serevi, who has two Rugby World Cup 7s with the Fiji men’s side in 1997 and 2005, confirmed the decision on his social media platforms yesterday.
“Grateful to God Almighty for the opportunity to be the head coach of the India 7s team starting today (yesterday),” Serevi stated in a post on Facebook.
The 7s maestro, who is considered as one of the best to have played the sport, said he was excited about his new role.
“I’m so excited and looking forward to give a hand help India to the next level in Asia Rugby.”
He said he was hopeful he will be able to help the national team of India develop in the sport of rugby sevens.
“14 years in the USA, helped grow the sport build rugby in Seattle to where it is now, and now to my 63rd country in the world India.”
Serevi played for the Fiji 7s team from 1990-2007. He also coached the national side from 2005-2009.
The 56-year-old also had the experience of coaching the Russian 7s team in 2018-2019.
Apart from winning two world cups, he has also won two silver and one bronze medal at the Commonwealth games for Fiji.
In the 15-man game, he played for Fiji 39 times between 1989 and 2003 and scored 376 points.
