Former President of Nauru Baron Waqa is the new Pacific Islands Forum secretary general.
On his first official visit to Fiji as secretary general, Mr Waqa paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Suva this week.
Mr Rabuka said they shared a commitment to continue pushing the forum’s vision of a resilient Pacific region.
“Congratulations, Mr Waqa, on your new role! I wish you all the best on your three-year tenure with the forum secretariat,” Mr Rabuka said in a social media post.
“As forum leaders, we all look forward to working hand in hand with secretary-general Waqa to advance the priorities of our region, in line with the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent Together, let us continue to build a brighter future for the Pacific and its people.”
Mr Waqa was the president of Nauru from 2013 to 2019.
