TALKS are underway to increase the number of flights Fiji Airways makes to Canberra, Australia.

Fiji Airways Fiji-Canberra flights first began in July 2023 with two flights per week, later increased to three flights a week due to strong demand.

Australian Capital Territory’s (ACT) Commissioner for International Engagement Brendan Smyth said there are now ongoing discussions to increase this.

“Last July it started with two flights and very quickly it went to three flights, every Sunday, every Tuesday, and every Friday. Their loads are reasonable, you’d have to talk to the airlines because they are doing a great job, and to get the numbers from them,” Mr Smyth said.

“But a number of our delegates had to travel through Sydney because they couldn’t get seats, so my understanding is that the flight is very successful.

“Our airport is also talking to your airport and so as to the airline, to make sure that we’re maximising all the opportunities. It’s a very exciting time.”

Mr Smyth is here in Fiji as part of a trade mission by the ACT Government led by its Office of International Engagement.

“Once we get trade established, then we should be able to fill up the Fiji flights coming in.

“The direct flight between Nadi and Canberra with your fabulous national airline has opened up an enormous amount of opportunity in terms of two-way tourism and two-way trade.”
