Roko Uluiburotukula of International Secondary School scooped a gold medal in the sub-junior boys high jump event, clearing the bar at 1.75 metres during the Fiji Finals yesterday.

Not only did he win gold, but he also set a new record in the event, beating the mark of 1.70m set by Samuel Lockington of Xavier College.

“Coming here today I was expecting to win gold, but I didn’t think I would go right ahead and break the record,” the 13-year-old said.

The Lauan lad said training over the past few weeks had been intense, as he had already set his target of winning gold weeks before the Fiji Finals.

“Ever since zone, I’ve made a goal to win a gold medal and I’m happy I’ve been able to achieve that here today (yesterday).”

He dedicated his win to his father, who has been helping him with his preparation.

“My father is basically my coach, he’s always waking me up early in the morning to go train so I would also like to dedicate this medal to him.”
