A senior civil servant in the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations has said that “in previous years, the Government would just bring in a law and enforce the law at the same time”.
Mediator Tomasi Keni stated at a public consultation in Ba last week the Coalition Government has embarked on a journey of tripartism that includes the involvement of stakeholders.
“The employers’ representative, the workers’ representative and the Government are working together,” he said.
“So, in previous years, the Government would just bring in a law and enforce the law at the same time.
“But with this introduction of tripartism in the system, with the amendment of the Employment Relations Act, we have activated the Employment Relations Advisory Board.
“And the Employment Relations Advisory Board comprises the three members — employers’ representatives is the Fiji Commerce & Employers Federation (FCEF), workers representatives from the unions and also representatives from the Government.
“So, these three bodies are sitting together at the moment looking at the amendment to the Employment Relations Act.”
Mr Keni said employers should address issues they had with the FCEF.
“It would be advisable to forward it to FCEF because they are the governing body involved in this tripartism in respect of the amendment of the Employment Relations Act.”
