The task of maintaining Savusavu Airport is a costly exercise, says municipal council chairperson Shankar Singh.
Mr Singh said discussions had been held on the development needs of the town.
“We have been in discussions with the World Bank regarding the construction of a new airport in Savusavu,” he said.
However, Mr Singh said the bank made it clear they would not allocate funds for the maintenance of the current infrastructure.
“Instead, they are focused on funding the construction of a new airport,” he said.
Mr Singh said the ideal location of the new airport would be decided by Fiji Airports Limited.
“This would depend on the size of the land given by landowners and the force of the wind.”
Mr Singh said a positive impact of such an infrastructure upgrade would be a boost to the local economy.
